William R. "Bill" Mitchell, 72, of Greenfield Township, PA, died Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Regional Hospital, Scranton, PA, surrounded by his family. Bill will be lovingly remembered by the love of his life, his "Warden" and wife of 31 years, the former Connie Demers. Their relationship was based on mutual support and deep love for each other, and was envied by all who know them.
Born June 13, 1944 in Scranton, PA, he was the son of the late Kenneth Mitchell, Sr. and Virginia Kloss.
Bill was a 1963 graduate of Abington Heights High School and worked as a part time police officer for Clarks Summit before becoming a truck driver. He owned and operated A & L Trucking in Greenfield Township for 52 years. He also served for 6 years in the 109th Pennsylvania National Guard.
Bill's greatest accomplishment in life was helping Connie raise two beautiful children, his girl, Laurel and son Aaron. Laurel and Aaron could do no wrong in Bill's eyes, and he would drop everything to be by their sides in times of joy and sadness.
Bill had no spare time. He filled his retirement by surrounding himself with the people he loved most, his family and friends, and, of course his loving canine companion, Bella. He loved picking up and going to flea markets in the wee hours of the morning and would often talk about the great finds he made. A generous man, Bill was known to throw chicken on his homemade barbecue pit in a moment's notice and feed all of his family and friends (and their friends). He was often found "holding court" at the Moxie Club in Carbondale, where he was known to pop into the kitchen and whip something up, just because someone at the bar was hungry.
However, Bill's favorite way to spend time was with his grandchildren Mitchell & Samantha. In the spring and summer, Bill and Mitchell spent their time poolside, on the tractor or playing in the back yard. In the fall and winter, they spent quality time teaching each other life lessons in the hot tub. They were best friends and Mitchell was truly his pa's "bud". Bill was so proud when Samantha joined the Army and encouraged and mentored her to become the woman she is today.
Bill looked forward to his family's annual vacation to Daytona Beach, where he was able to spend his days relaxing by the pool or on the beach, surrounded by all of his favorite people. He also loved Christmas. Nothing pleased him more than showering his family in gifts and love and forcing them to watch 24 hours of John Wayne movies. He also enjoyed his Sunday rides with Connie to Chet's Place in their convertible.
He is survived by one son: Aaron Hayes and companion Lori Amorine of Mayfield, PA; one daughter: Laurel Masco and husband John of Carbondale, PA; two grandchildren Mitchell Masco and Samantha Amorine; one brother: Kenneth Mitchell, Jr. and wife Donna of Chinchilla, PA; father and mother- in- law: Doeke and Shirley Demers of Columbia, NJ; sister-in-law: Cindy Grodkiewicz and husband Jeff of Glen Gardner, NJ; brothers-in-law: Randy and Danny Demers of Columbia and several nieces and nephews
