Walter Zabrowski, Sr., 96, of Greenfield Township, PA, passed away Thursday morning, September 3, 2015 at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, PA, following a short illness. He was the husband of the late Rose Hameza, who died May 2, 2013.
They would have celebrated 65 years of marriage on June 26, 2013, one month after her passing.
Born May 31, 1919 in Pittsburgh, PA of the greatest generation, he was the son of the late Julius, Sr. and Victoria Solomon Zabrowski.
Walter was a graduate of Greenfield High School and enlisted in the Army shortly after where he served during World War II. Walter was truly honored and proud to serve his country and fought in the Battle of Anzio Beach, Italy. He worked as a lineman in the military and was a member of the 34th Division, 135th Infantry. He was so proud that he was awarded the following medals and awards: Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct, WW II Victory, Meritorious Unit Emblem, Combat Infantryman Badge, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, French Unit Citation, Sharpshooters Badge with Rifle and Carbine Bar and French Diploma for Helping Liberate France during the war.
After discharged from the military, Walter moved back home and was a dairy farmer for several years. He also was the owner and operator of Breezy Grove on his farm and received the nickname Breezy.
He then became an instructor for Northeast Training Institute (NTI), Greenfield Township for 24 years before his retirement. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Cathedral, Mayfield, PA, Teamsters Local Union 229, a life member of the VFW Post 3474, Dunmore and VFW, Mayfield and a life member of the Clifford Township Volunteer Fire Company.
Walter enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, canning and enjoyed traveling with his wife Rose. He was very active in attending the Anzio Beachhead Veterans of World War II reunions every year. He had a love for animals, but most of all loved his family dearly.
The family would like to thank Tim Campbell, Kathy Hicks and Lisa Montella for their kind and compassionate care to Walter.
He is survived by two sons: Ronald Zabrowski, Sr. and wife Ann Marie of Greenfield Township, PA and Walter Zabrowski, Jr. and wife Mary Ellen of Scott Township, PA; one daughter: Carole McAndrew, with whom he resided; five grandchildren: Ronald Zabrowski, Jr. and wife Melissa, Jason and wife Elizabeth, Walter, III., Daniel and Bryan Zabrowski; five great grandchildren: Ronald, III., Christopher, Katie, Evan and Grace; three sisters: Delores Kapinus and Gertrude Malahosky, both of Scott Township, PA and Irene Maciaszek of New Jersey; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers: Henry, Julius, Jr. and Edward Zabrowski; two sisters: Elizabeth Bahleda and Stefee Olechna.
The funeral was held Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Cathedral, 706 Hill Street, Mayfield, with the Very Reverend Mitered Archpriest John Sorochka. Interment with military honors, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA.
Pallbearers: Walter Zabrowski, III., Ronald Zabrowski, Jr., Jason Zabrowski, Christopher Zabrowski, Daniel Zabrowski and Bryan Zabrowski.
Friends called Tuesday, September 8, 2015 from 5-8 p.m. at the Shifler-Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 18 Airport Road, Clifford, PA. Parastas was held at 7:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations were sent to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702 or National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, 333 Pennsylvania Avenue SE, Washington, DC 20003-1148.
