Obituary

Walter Nitterauer, Jr., 76, of South Gibson, PA, died Saturday night, September 2, 2023 under the care of hospice at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, Allentown, PA, after an extended illness. His wife and best friend, the former Cathy Lynn Aderhold died on August 29, 2023. They were married on August 13, 1976.

Born in Philadelphia, he was son of the late Walter and Margaret Wilmot Nitterauer, Sr.

After high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corp and served in I Company, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment during the Vietnam War. Honorably discharged as a Lance Corporal in 1969, he was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

After Vietnam, he joined the Philadelphia Fire Department as a firefighter and paramedic, a job he loved very much. Over the years, he received numerous citations and awards for act of bravery and heroism both on and off duty. He was injured on duty and had to take an early retirement. In 1988, he and his family moved to South Gibson where he was very active in Boy Scouts for over 12 years, local masonic lodges and his children's activities. He truly loved living on his mountain in Northeast Pennsylvania.

He is survived by one son: Walter Nitterauer, III. who is serving with the U.S. Navy in Pax River, MD; one daughter: Katie Nitterauer of Glenside, PA; two grandchildren: Mairead and Morgan; one sister: Margaret Nitterauer of Albuquerque, NM; one niece and one nephew.

He was also preceded in death by one daughter: Elizabeth Nitterauer.

The funeral for Walter and Cathy was held Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. from the Shifler-Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 18 Airport Road, Clifford, PA, with Rev. Ray Mitchell, pastor of the South New Milford Baptist Church, officiating. Interment with military honors, South Gibson Cemetery, South Gibson, PA.

Pallbearers: James Shearouse, Peter Shearouse, Ryan McAllister, Ethan McAllister, Brendan Herley and Alexander Frascone.

A viewing was held Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
