Walter N. Evanishyn, 62, RD #1, New Milford, died unexpectedly early Wednesday morning, January 15, 2003 at the Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City, NY.
He was born February 25, 1940 in Forest City, PA. He was the son of the late Wasyl and Mary Milnachuk Evanishyn.
He was a member of the VFW in Great Bend.
His family and friends knew him as an incredibly giving, hard working man, with a wicked sense of humor and a tendency to believe the best of anyone. His community knew him as well, you knew him. If youre reading this about Walt now, you knew him. He was a buddy, a gentle tease, a flirt. He was an honest and good man with his fair share of joys and his allotment of sorrow. He was Walt.
He always wanted to be James Dean (old photos of him: invariable wearing greaser hair-do, leather jacket, white T) but settled for being a pretty good carpenter. Driving through the Endless Mountains we could point out properties he fixed up or looked after. Half the barns in the area owe their roofs to him, it seems. He collected the 50s roadsters of his youth. Ran a hobby farm for his family. Enjoyed hunting and fishing with his buddies. Served in the U.S. Navy, seeing action in the Bay of Pigs. He lied about his age when he was 15, backdating his birthday, just to get his drivers license a year early, so he could help his parents around the farm. His middle initial, when official forms asked for a middle name, was N, for None. He loved that joke.
He is survived by two daughters: Donna Austin of Barrie, Ontario, Canada and Katrina Evanishyn of Hastings On Hudson, NY.; two sons: Kevin Michael Evanishyn of Mesa, AZ. and Walter Evanishyn of Tacoma, WA.; four sisters: Annie Wolfe of Forest City, PA., Mary Steponitis of Uniondale, PA., Elizabeth Scott of Forest City, PA. and Pauline Williams of Uniondale, PA.; Several Nieces and Nephews and 7 loving Grandchildren. Theyre all going to miss him. His friends are going to miss him. And to all who never knew him, were sorry you missed your chance. Walt was a great guy.
He was preceded in death by one brother: Michael Evanishyn; and one sister: Stella Kloptosky
