Walter F. Dowd, age 84, a lifelong resident of Carbondale, PA., died Monday evening, July 5, 2010 at the Osprey Ridge Health Care Center, Carbondale. Born January 2, 1926 in Carbondale, PA., he was the son of the late Leo M. and Florence (Toolan) Dowd. He was a 1943 graduate of the Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and worked for 15 years at Gentex Corporation, Simpson, PA. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale and was an avid reader. Walter took Spanish courses in high school and spoke very good Spanish until this day. The family would like to thank all of the staff at the Osprey Ridge Healthcare Center for their loving care to Walter. He is survived by four sisters: Alberta Barnes of Peckville, PA., Elizabeth Betty Dowd of Carbondale, PA., Marion Bartosh of Peckville, PA. and Helen Kingsley of Johnson City, NY.; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Leo, Joseph and Daniel Dean Dowd; two sisters: Lorraine and Florence Dowd. The funeral was held Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 8:30 AM from the Edward A. Wade Funeral Home Cremation Services, Inc., 4 Morris Place at Terrace Street, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 AM in St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Church Street, Carbondale. Interment, parish cemetery, Carbondale. Friends called Wednesday, July 7, 2010, from 5-8 PM.
