Thomas J. Cerra, 82, of Greenfield Township, PA., died Friday morning, December 6, 2013 at Regional Hospital, Scranton, PA, following an illness. His wife is the former Catherine Scavo. They were married on September 6, 1958.
Born May 15, 1931 in Carbondale, PA, he was the son of the late Charles and Rose Adams Cerra.
He was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and served in the Army as a Sergeant during the Korean War. He worked as a mechanic for Chamberlain Manufacturing, Scranton and in his later years he worked at Takach's Grove in Greenfield Township and drove a school van for Northeast Student Transportation.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Carbondale and was a charter member of the Greenfield Township Volunteer Fire Company. He has served as a Greenfield Township Supervisor since 1975 and was recently re-elected to his sixth term. He was instrumental in the creation of the Greenfield Township Municipal Building, Sgt. Eric Slebodnick Memorial Park and the township sewer system. He was a jack of all trades, enjoyed playing the lottery and most of all enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Dr. Bekele, Dr. Prior, Dr. Ramey, Dr. Eagan and the eighth floor staff at the Regional Hospital, especially Johnson, Holly and Amanda for all of their wonderful care and support .
He is survived by two daughters: Ann Marie Didato and husband Thomas and Susanne Totsky and husband Mark, all of Greenfield Township, PA; three grandchildren: Matthew and Michael Didato and Katie Totsky; one sister: Celia Tolerico of Carbondale, PA; two brothers: Joseph Cerra of Dunmore, PA and Dean Cerra of Greenfield Township, PA; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother: Mickey Cerra; one sister: Marie Lapera.
The funeral was held Monday, December 9, 2013 at 9:00 AM from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale, PA, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale, celebrated by Msgr. David L. Tressler, pastor. Interment with military honors, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA.
Honor Guard was provided by the Greenfield Township Volunteer Fire Company. Pallbearers: Matthew Didato, Michael Didato, Walter Casper, Charles Cerra, Robert Paone, Paul Fortuner and Joseph Slebodnick. Friends called Sunday, December 8, 2013 from 4-8 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions in Tom's name to the Greenfield Township Volunteer Fire Company, where he devoted 47 years of service. Contributions were sent to 423 Route 106, Greenfield Township, PA 18407.
