Obituary

Theodore Kastawa, 80, a resident of the Carbondale Nursing Home, Carbondale, PA. and formerly of Carbondale Township, PA., died Thursday, November 17, 2011 at the nursing home. He was preceded in death by his wife the former Lois Williams of Nicholson, who died in 1996. Born in Mayfield, PA, he was the son of the late Walter and Anita Mroczka Kastawa. He was a graduate of Mayfield High School and was a veteran of the Coast Guard. He was the proprietor of Ted's Service Station and U-Haul Rentals, a local landmark and institution. Ted's place was like no other, it was a gathering place for sportsman far and wide who came to tell their big game stories or to inquire as to where the fish might be biting. Its museum like atmosphere was home for a multitude of trophy buck, fish and even a bobcat and a rare albino weasel. You would only have to tell Ted what you were fishing for and he would recommend the bait that you needed including the Kastawa special, a secret live bait that he reserved for only special regular customers. Ted also had the first U-Haul dealership in the area and received a 40 year service award from the president of U-Haul. Ted's daughter in law, Donna Smith Kastawa was his special caretaker and dedicated the past five years of her life to him. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Donna for her tireless work along with Ted, Jr. and their daughter Cassidy for opening up their home to Ted, Sr. Special thanks is also given to Dianne Canedy and the staff of the Carbondale Nursing Home. He is survived by three children: Vicki Wagner and husband Mike of Newton Lake, PA., Ted Kastawa, Jr. and wife Donna of Clifford, PA. and Patricia Dunning and husband Charlie of Greenfield Township, PA.; six grandchildren: Mike Wagner, Jr., Mandi Shaffer, Bob and Kaylee Dunning, Kristen and Cassidy Kastawa; six great grandchildren: Shayne O'Malley Wagner, Seth Wagner, Emmalee and Noah Shaffer, Aubrianna Fendrock and Ciearrah Dinning; one brother: Ron Kastawa; uncles: Stan, Andrew and Frank Mroczka; numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral was held Monday, November 21, 2011 at 8:30 AM from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale, PA., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 AM in St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Church Street, Carbondale, celebrated by Rev. John C. O'Bell, associate pastor. Interment, Nicholson Cemetery, Nicholson, PA., with committal prayers officiated by Rev. Edward L.
