Obituary

Surrounded by her loving family, Sophie Ann Fofi, 89, of Carbondale, PA, passed away peacefully Monday, November 2, 2026 at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, PA, from pneumonia complications. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Raymond D. Fofi, on December 22, 2009.

Born May 28, 1937 in Carbondale, PA, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Theresa Pupchick Lagoda.

Sophie Ann attended Carbondale schools and graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School. She worked in the garment industry for many years before changing careers later in life to pursue her passion for caring for others by earning her CNA. She spent many years providing in-home nursing care, comfort, and support to those in need.

Sophie Ann was quick to share a smile, joke, or kind word with friends and strangers alike, hoping to make their day better. She understood that you can’t always see the struggles people carry. Along with polkas and nature, Sophie Ann enjoyed baking. Family and friends alike looked forward to her cakes, cookies, and most especially her blueberry pies and muffins.

She is survived by two daughters: Theresa Fofi (Stephen Jones) of Youngsville, NC, and Renee Magnotta (Chris Coolican) of Greenfield Township, PA; two grandsons: Evan and Mason Magnotta of Greenfield Township, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by five brothers: John, Michael, Joseph, Stephen, and Peter Lagoda; and four sisters: Helen McHale, Marie Scher, Ann Hope, and Martha Robinson.

On November 5, 2026 in accordance with Sophie Ann’s wishes, private memorial services and entombment took place at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA, under the direction of the Edward A. Wade Funeral Home, Inc., Carbondale, PA.

A celebration of life will take place at a future date for those who spent meaningful time with Sophie Ann in her later days.

Special thanks to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart team, especially Kayla, whose unwavering support and guidance provided immeasurable comfort.
