Samuel J. Thotto Mancuso age 85, of 112 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale died Saturday evening March 30, 2002 at Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton after a brief illness. His wife is the former Nancy Volpe, formerly of Newburgh and Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. They would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on April 21, 2002.
Born July 23, 1916 in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Anthony and Roserella (Falbo) Mancuso, formerly of Duffy Street, Carbondale.
A 1936 Graduate of Carbondale High School, he was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Carbondale and its Holy Name Society.
He was a World War II Army Veteran, and instructed West Point cadets in the operation and maintenance of coastal artillery weapons. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater of Operations Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
Before retirement, he was employed as an Advertising Manager by the Carbondale News for 32 years. He also was employed by the Carbondale Review and the Scranton Tribune.
He was the former President of the U.S. Harness Writers Association of Monticello, NY, and was a member of the Chick Feldman Writers Foundation, the A.A.U. Boxing Commission, and the American Legion Albert H. Crane Post 221.
He was also a ring announcer for wrestling and boxing matches held at the Scranton C.Y.C.
He was active in the Republican Party for many years and served as Judge of Elections and Committeeman in the 1-4 District in Carbondale.
He is survived two daughters: Nancy Shields of Carbondale, PA. and Barbara Kavulich of Jermyn, PA.; two sisters: Theresa Graziano and Antoinette Dolly Mancuso both of Carbondale, PA.; two brothers: Santo Lefty Mancuso and Joseph Mancuso both of Carbondale, PA.; Nieces Nephews
He was preceded in death by five brothers: James Mancuso, Frank Wedgie Mancuso, Russell Rossi Mancuso, Louis Mancuso, and James Mancuso; one sister, Frances Scarpino
The funeral was held Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at 9:00 am from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home, Inc. Farview and 41st Streets Carbondale with mass at 9:30 am at Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale celebrated by Rev. Russell Motsay, Pastor. Entombment, Mother Of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Twp.
Viewing was held Tuesday, April 2, 2002 from 2-4 and 7-9.
