Obituary

Samuel Cadora, Jr., 76, of Carbondale, PA died Thursday, March 31, 2016 at the Gino Merli Veterans Center, Scranton, PA. Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Samuel Cadora, Sr. and Lillian Molinaro Cadora Taroli. Sam was an Army veteran and had a distinguished career as a Control Fire Crewman, stationed in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan at the Kincheloe Air Force Base. The base served as a refueling stop for aircraft headed for Alaska and the defense of the Soo Locks, which enabled ships to travel between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. At the outbreak of the Cold War, the base was guarded by the Army around the clock. Sam was stationed at the base during an incident when a Russian pilot who lost radio contact while flying over the highly guarded area was forced to land at the base by an American fighter squadron. Sam had been employed for 20 years at the former Triangle Pacific Cabinet Company and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Carbondale. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The staff at Gino Merli was outstanding. Vito Regario, the new commandant, was not only kind, but also very accommodating. If any veteran asked for access to a recreational activity, they received it. Even something as simple as setting up a table to gather around to play cards for a bit, he made it happen. Sheryl Ruby was just as kind. She would make sure I was the first to know about any new development with my brother's condition. In his own words Sam referred to her as "a great lady." I would also like to thank the hospice nurses, the reverend who prayed with my family and I, as well as Margo the social worker, Maria, Julie and so many others. May God bless you all. He is survived by children: Sherry Lynn, Shelly, Susan, Christina Cadora and Samuel Cardora, III.; a sister: Mary Lil Hayslett of Carbondale; 17 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; aunts and unlces: Theresa Molinaro-Slick of Carbondale and late husband Ernie, Gertrude Molinaro-Turk and husband John of Connecticut, Delores Molinaro-Kuttrubis and husband Nick of Carbondale, Josephine Cadora-Tomaine of the Carbondale Nursing Home and late husband Joseph. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Frank "Sunshine" and Mary Rogus Molinaro; ex-wife: Sandra Perry Cadora Farr; aunts and uncles: Isadore Cadora and wife Angela Stallo Cadora, Frank Cadora and wife Pauline Dominick Cadora and Susan Cadora Gatto and husband Nunzio. A private graveside service with military honors was held at the convenience of the family at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery, Carbondale, under the direction of Carmine J. & Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Carbondale In lieu of flowers, Sam and sister, Mary Lil Cadora-Hayslett requested memorial contributions to be sent to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale, PA 18407 or the Gino Merli Veterans Center, 401 Penn Avenue, Scranton, PA 18503.
