Russell A. Scavo, 87, Carbondale, PA, died Sunday, January 31, 2016 at home following a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Clara Leo Scavo, who died on November 25, 2005.
Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Angelo and Margaret Sirianni Scavo.
Russell attended Benjamin Franklin High School in Carbondale and graduated in 1945. He later joined the Army and served in the Korean War. Upon his return from Korea, he worked in the garment industry and attended night school. He became a police officer for the Carbondale Police Department and served 25 plus years of service, retiring in 1988 as detective sergeant with the juvenile division. It was a job he loved and enjoyed, molding young lives. Upon retirement, he became co-owner of Country Classic Kitchens. This was his second passion to design cabinets. He loved to work in his wood shop and make all types of furniture for his daughters and family. He will be deeply missed by his granddogs, Mocha and Zorro and his four cats.
He was the devoted father of Lindsey Scavo-Striefsky and husband Paul of Somers Point, NJ, Susan Scavo-Palmiero and husband James of Greenfield Township, PA and Clare Scavo and partner Greg Stackhouse of Carbondale, PA; he is also survived by one sister: Particia Scavo-Lewis of Brooklyn, PA; two brother-in-laws: Anthony "Sonny" Leo of Carbondale, PA and Frank Pascoe of Trafford, PA; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister: Theresa Scavo-Weidner; two sister-in-laws: Jane Leo-Pascoe and Ceil Leo-McDonnell; two brother-in-laws: Pat McDonnell and Carl Lewis.
The funeral was held Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. from the Carmine J. & Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale, celebrated by Rev. Joseph Sitko. Interment with military honors, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA.
Pallbearers: Patrick McDonnell, Paul Roberts, Tyler Liptak, Thomas Liptak, Joseph Cowan and Matthew Cowan. Honor guard provided by members of the Carbondale Police Department. Friends called Wednesday, February 3, 2016 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.
