Rolland (Ron) White, 79, of Tompkinsville died accidently on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 while doing what he enjoyed, farming. He is survived by his wife, Lois (Vergano) White. They were married on April 21, 1962 and enjoyed over 55 years together. They enjoyed trips together to Lancaster and the Sunday drives that added to their time with each other. They visited Italy together and had a cruise to the Caribbean that created everlasting memories. She was completely devoted to Ron, always making sure he was taken care of before herself.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Eloise Goodrich, Annabel Wells, and Vina Goodrich.
He is survived by three sons, Dean White and wife Wendy, David White, and Daniel White and wife Laura, all of Tompkinsville Pa; grandchildren, James White, Heather Johnson and her husband Tom, Cassandra White, Cody White, Colby White; and great grandchild, Daisy May. He also had five nieces and nephews including, Judy Short, Shirley Iyoob, Mary Brown, Douglas Goodrich, and the late Ken Goodrich.
Born March 26, 1938 at Carbondale General, the son of the late Earl and Agatha (Powell) White. He attended Greenfield Township school and was a graduate of Scott Township High School.
He served in the U.S. Army stationed in Seoul Area Command, Korea and later stationed in St. Louis, Missouri, where he met his wife, Lois.
He was employed at Picatinny Arsenal, Dover, NJ for 10 years, where he held numerous sporting records in baseball and basketball some of which still stand today. In 1974 he returned home to Tompkinsville, and retired from a career of photography at the Tobyhanna Army Depot in 1990 at age 52.
His passion since retirement was operating White's Farm along with his three sons. The farm has been in the family in excess of 150 years. He managed a herd of Registered Polled Herefords and Black Angus cattle, from which he received so much enjoyment and where he spent his final moments. His faithful friend, Doug Merkel was always available when he needed a helping hand.
He was an outstanding athlete, excelling in baseball and basketball, where he received numerous trophies, awards and recognition including all 8th Army All-Star and leading scorer. He was one of the original members of the Greenfield Lions Club Athletic Division and initiated the founding of the Greenfield Little League Stadium (Slebodnik Memorial Sports Complex) where he tirelessly invested countless hours from its inception to completion. He also managed the Greenfield A's to their league championship in 1977 and the Greenfield Lions to their league championship (Abington Teener League) in 1980. He was also an avid hunter and lifetime member of the NRA.
He was a kind, humble husband, father and friend with a soft-spoken character that instilled by example, a set of Christian values and principles within his family and lived them out daily. A man who always saw the goodness in others and truly held a firm belief in God.
He always enjoyed talking about hunting and the outdoors with his son, Dean (joking about who had the ideal hunting spot and would get the biggest deer). He loved talking about traveling and gardening with his son David. There was always a discussion who would have the first tomato. A trip was scheduled with David to the Grand Canyon commencing on September 6, but I am certain he is seeing even more beautiful sights in heaven. He shared David's love for playing basketball, offering all his knowledge and expertise obtained from an outstanding sports career. His son Dan was his farming pal, both sharing the passion for farming. Endless hours were spent bailing hay, while trying to keep ahead of the rain and weather challenges. There was always some kidding about who had the best cattle. His grandchildren, James, Heather, Cassandra, Cody & Colby were always stars in his eyes. James was Grandpa's first grandchild and they spent many childhood hours together. Heather had the love of the farm and spent countless hours with grandpa feeding and watching of the cattle. Cassandra shared her love and kindness when Grandpa needed it most, thinking not of herself while making Grandpa the top priority. Colby and Grandpa shared the love of sports, spending unending hours showing her all he knew. They enjoyed many games together, talking sports and taking in the Railriders games. Cody and Grandpa shared their love of ice cream and secret snacks without grandma's knowledge. Cody loved Grandpa's version of the song, "Home On The Range"! He attended the Elkdale Baptist Church of West Clifford.
He will be dearly missed by his loved ones and all who truly knew him. He is now at peace and in glory with his Creator.
