Rita Horan, 94, of Carbondale, PA, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 after a short illness. Born in Carbondale, PA, Rita was the beloved daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Scanlon Horan. A lifelong member of St. Rose of Lima Parish, Carbondale she was a daily mass attendant and communicant. She graduated from Marywood University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1948 and was a member of its alumni association. Rita was employed in the office of St. Rose Parish for many years. Since her retirement in 1988, she actively supported fund raising for St. Rose Parish and for the Diocese of Scranton. She was a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. Rita was a generous, kind, and well loved aunt to eleven nieces and nephews, their spouses, children, and grandchildren. Survivors include: Mary Bannon Walter, Florida, Therese Martin McDonald, New Hampshire, Patrick Martin, Indiana, Elizabethann Bannon, Indiana, Kathleen Martin McCarthy, Florida, Eileen Bannon, Pennsylvania, Michael Martin, Pennsylvania, Kathleen Bannon McKernan, Indiana, Mary Martin, Florida, Anne Bannon Kuna, Pennsylvania, and Thomas Martin, South Carolina. Rita's loving memory will be cherished by her family. Rita was also preceded in death by her three brothers: Reverend Monsignor Thomas C. Horan, Reverend Walter H. Horan OP, and Reverend Monsignor Kenneth T. Horan; three sisters: Elizabeth Horan, Evelyn Horan Bannon and Mary Horan Martin; and a nephew: James Martin. The funeral was held Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. from the Edward A. Wade Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 4 Morris Place at Terrace Street, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale, concelebrated by: Msgr. David Tressler, pastor of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Parish, Jermyn, PA; Rev. James Price, pastor of St. Rose of Lima Parish, Carbondale; Rev. Joseph Sitko, pastor of St. Mary's Church, Waymart, PA, and Rev. John Doris, pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Dunmore, PA. Internment, St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Carbondale.
