Obituary

Rev. Lynn H. Tompkins, 78, of South Gibson, PA, died Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at Allied Hospice, Scranton, PA, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Jane Griffin. Born January 6, 1942 in New Milford, PA, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Teresa Payne Tompkins. Lynn was an Army veteran having served in West Germany on the Berlin Wall during the Cold War. He was a skilled carpenter having been self-employed for many years. Rev. Tompkins was a graduate of the University of Scranton, having received a Bachelor's of Arts degree in theology and later furthered his studies at Drew University, New Jersey. He was ordained into United Methodist Church and served the Wyoming Conference as pastor of the Carley Brook, Smith Hill, Westover and Glenwood parishes. Before his retirement, he later served as pastor of the Friends of Christ Church. He was a loving husband, supportive father and proud grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family. His true passion in life was fishing and every free moment he had would be spent casting a line into his favorite fishing hole. He was a simple man who lived by the motto, "God, Family and Country." He is also survived by four sons: Kenneth and wife, Judy of Oneonta, NY, Wayne and wife, Barbara of Athens, TX, John and wife, Cheryl of South Gibson, PA and Nate and wife, Marsha of South Gibson, PA; ten grandchildren: Sandy, Jake, Tyler, Clair, Hollis, Paulina, Marguerite, Avery, Adia and Addison; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters: Lois Ketzel of New Castle, PA and Linda Jewel of Mercer, PA; several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a brother: Bryce Tompkins. A private graveside service was held Saturday, August 15, 2020 at the South Gibson Cemetery, South Gibson, PA, with Pastor John Shaffer, of the South Gibson United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements were entrusted to the Shifler-Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Clifford, PA.
