Rev. Joseph E. Srebro, 60, of Scranton, PA., died Thursday, September 20, 2007 at home after having fought a long and courageous battle with colon cancer. He is survived by his beloved bride of 38 years, the former Sharon Jean Frizzelle. Rev. Srebro was born and raised in the Scranton area and is the son of Regina (Roshak) Srebro and the late Joseph L. Srebro. He was a graduate of Scranton Preparatory School (1964), the University of Maryland (BA Philosophy, 1973) and Southern Seminary in Louisville KY (M.Div., 1977); and was completing course work toward a Doctor of Ministry degree at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary before becoming ill. He served in the United States Air Force from 1965 until 1969 as a Chinese Mandarin linguist. After serving the Lord Jesus Christ in full-time Christian ministry for over 34 years, Rev. Srebro pastored or served on staff with The American Baptist Churches USA churches in Silver Springs, MD.; Salem, IN.; Jerseyville, IL.; Peoria, IL.; Scotia, NY. and most recently as Senior Pastor at The Central Baptist Church of Woodbury, NJ. His hobbies and interests included distance running, restoring old muscle cars and deep-woods backpacking and mountain climbing in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York (especially in winter) with his ever-loyal canine companion, Buddy. He has the distinction of becoming the 151st person to climb all 46 high peaks 4000 feet+ in the Adirondacks during winter after having become the 3102nd one to do so in summer. He was assigned the permanent climbing number 46R3102W by the Adirondack Forty-Sixers Inc. He was an armchair student of the sciences and how they interact with the Christian worldview. He is survived by daughter: Jennifer Rachel Pike and husband Lawrence; son: Jeremy Daniel Srebro and fiancee Laura Hopkins; granddaughter: Sydney Jean Gushlaw; grandson: Daniel Joseph Srebro and two step-granddaughters: Rebecca Leah Pike. He is also survived by his eight brothers and sisters: Marion, Colette Hughes, Lenny, Elaine Ord, Regina Collins, Paul, Mark, and Thomas and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother: Anthony; and a niece: Christina Ziegler. A private viewing before cremation was held Saturday, September 22, 2007 at the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home, Inc., Carbondale, PA.
A public memorial service was celebrated at The United Baptist Church of Scranton, 213 S. Main Ave., Scranton, on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 12:30 PM, with the Rev. Earl O. Cassel, officiating. A luncheon reception followed in the church's Fellowship Hall. Family and friends called at the church starting at 12:00 PM. Rev. Srebros remains were placed in the Adirondack good earth where Buddy's remains already lay. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The United Baptist Church of Scranton PA. or The Central Baptist Church of Woodbury, NJ.
