Obituary

Rev. Donald Walter Bartholomay, 90, of Greenwich, NY. and formerly of Cottrell Lake, Uniondale, PA., died at home Tuesday, October 17, 2006. He is survived by his wife the former Doris Brunner. They were married June 22, 1938 in Carbondale. He was born over Bartholomays Store on October 15, 1916 in Vandling, PA. and was the son of the late Walter and Nettie Taylor Bartholomay. He graduated from Vandling Public Schools and attended the University of Scranton at age 16 and later enrolled in Simmons School of Embalming, Syracuse, NY. Upon graduating from mortuary school he returned to and graduated from the University of Scranton. He was a licensed funeral director for 20 plus years and operated out of Carbondale and Waymart. He later followed a calling to the ministry and attended Temple University in Philadelphia and completed his religious studies at Crozier Theological Seminary in Chester. While at Crozier he had the honor to meet Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was visiting his old dorm room at the seminary which happened to be Donalds dorm room at the time. The two sat on the bed together and talked. Over the years, he ministered at Methodist churches in Clifford, Lenoxville, Forest City, Uniondale, East Ararat, Scranton, Carbondale, Sidney, NY and Binghamton, NY. He was a Navy veteran of World War II having served as a pharmacists mate and was a member of DeMolay and the Masons. He is survived by one son: Donald John Bartholomay and wife Kathleen; two granddaughters: Zoe Grace and Emma Quincy Bartholomay all of Greenwich, NY.; one brother: Walter C. Bartholomay of Forest City, PA.; Nieces and Nephews: Raymond, Joyce, and Barbara Brunner, Jack Grier, Debbie Bartholomay, Lynn DeSanto and Susan Falbo. He was preceded in death by one brother: Robert Bobby Bartholomay; one sister: Frieda Gerrity; one niece: Nancy Bartholomay. A memorial service was held Saturday, November 4, 2006 at 11:00 AM in the Uniondale United Methodist Church, Uniondale, with the Rev. Patricia Hanley, Pastor, officiating. Internment, Rounds Uniondale Cemetery, Uniondale. Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home, Inc., Carbondale, assisted the family with arrangements.
