Patrick Henry Pettinato, 95, formerly of Carbondale, PA, died Saturday, August 27, 2016 at the home of his daughter, Patrice, in Germantown, MD. His wife of 55 years, Madelyn Pollits, died January 27, 2010.
Born July 5, 1921 in Carbondale, he was the oldest son of the late Santo and Marie Sachele Pettinato. He was a 1939 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School in Carbondale. Upon graduation, he started work at the Naval Shipyards in Philadelphia. After Pearl Harbor, like many in his generation, he enlisted in the Navy. He was assigned to the USS Biscayne, an amphibious force flagship and saw action in the Mediterranean Sea supporting the Allied offensive in Italy. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart after being severely wounded in an aerial attack and spent many months in Libya recuperating. He returned to Carbondale after his discharge and was hired at the US Postal Service. He was employed for 42 years as a carrier walking the Canaan Street route every day and was also employed at Pocono Downs for many years. He was an excellent pianist (taught by his mother), singer, dancer and bowler. He was a life-long fan of the New York Yankees.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and was a volunteer at its Feast. He was an ardent reciter of the rosary. He was also a past member of Carbondale UNICO. After retirement, he traveled worldwide with his wife but enjoyed visiting, on a regular basis, Hilton Head Island, SC and Medugorje, in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He lived for his family all his life and was most happy when everyone was together.
The family would like to express its gratitude for the compassionate care given to Patrick by the staffs at Holy Cross Hospital's Intensive Care and Hospice Units in Germantown, Maryland.
He is survived by two sons: Mark Pettinato and wife Pauline of Monrovia, MD and Glenn Pettinato and wife Terri of Clarks Summit, PA; a daughter: Patrice Pettinato of Germantown, MD, with whom he resided with for the last several years; five grandchildren: Alyssa, Anthony, Maria, Michael and Matthew; three sisters-in-law: Antoinette Leotti of Manville, NJ; Connie Pettinato and Mary Russo both of Carbondale, PA; 11 nieces and nephews and numerous cousins across the country.
He was preceded in death by younger brothers: Carmino and Peter David; two sisters-in-law: Ann Russo and Rosemary Pettinato; two brothers-in-law: Joseph Russo and Frank Leotti.
The funeral was held Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. from Carmine J. & Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale, celebrated by Rev. Paul Fontanella, assistant pastor. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA.
Pallbearers: Damien Russo, Robbie Turano, Ross Tolerico, Michael, Matthew and David Pettinato.
