Obituary

Olympia Nempie Nicholas, age 88, of Scranton, PA, died Monday afternoon, October 17, 2011 at NYU Medical Center, New York, NY. She was the wife of 55 years to the late Charles A. Nicholas, who died July 8, 2007. Born October 27, 1922 in Carbondale, PA., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Angelina (Scalzo) Talarico. She was a 1941 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and worked in the office for 20 years at her family's business, Simpson Motors. She was always so proud of the way she could drive a Mack Truck. She also helped her husband Charlie at their pizza business in Scranton, Nicholas Pizza. In the 1950's, they owned a fruit and Christmas tree business in Chinchilla and he became known as Chinchilla Charlie. She was a member of St. Paul's Church, Scranton and its Catholic Women's Club. She loved her trips to Atlantic City, New York City and Europe. She enjoyed spending winters in Miami and visiting her family in Southern Italy. She was a beach lover and sun worshiper. She loved playing cards, cooking, baking and was an avid canner. Her kitchen was open to anyone who came to visit her home. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandson who was the light of her eye. Her family will dearly miss her. The family would like to thank Dr. Guy Fasciana, Dr. Keith Pritchyk, Dr. Chris Peters, Dr. Thomas Roe and Lori Hart and Danny Iannielli of Sheeley's Drug Store, Scranton for all of their wonderful care to Olympia. She is survived by two daughters: Linda Nicholas of New York City, NY. and Charleen Fasciana and husband Joseph of Dunmore, PA.; one grandson: Nicholas Fasciana of Dunmore, PA.; one sister: Elizabeth Betty Amato of DeFuniak Springs, FL.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in the United States and Carlopoli, Italy. She was preceded in death by five brothers: Frank, Constantine, Frederick, Dominick and Serafine Talarico; seven sisters: Mary Gillott, Angela Parise, Hortense Sposito, Rose Grazzini, Julia Talarico, Theresa Carden and Mafalda Enslin. The funeral was held Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 9:00 AM from McGoff-Hughes Funeral Home, Inc., 1401 Capouse Avenue, Scranton, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM in St. Paul's Church, 1510 Penn Avenue, Scranton, celebrated by Msgr. Michael J. Delaney, assistant pastor. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Pallbearers: P.J. Gillott, Frank Talarico, Joseph Talarico, Gus Ottoson, Jerry Docteur, Paul Nealon and Joseph Pinto. Friends called Wednesday, October 19, 2011 from 4-8 PM. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Nempie's nephews from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Carbondale, PA.
