IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Nancy Wind
Ross
November 22, 1933 – October 27, 2024
Nancy Wind Ross, died gracefully at home on Sunday, October 27, 2024 stating she had had a wonderful and productive life, but was now ready to go, and wished peace for all her many friends.
She was born November 22, 1933, the oldest daughter of the late Richard D. and Ann (Weis) Wind, and grew up in Chatham, NJ. She attended public schools in Chatham and was an honor student and a cheerleader as a member of the Class of 1951.
She married Bruce E. Ross of Scranton, in 1953, and they lived in New Jersey. They also had a farm property near Elk Mt. in Union Dale, PA, where they spent weekends throughout the year. She had four children, and the family were all avid skiers. Nancy was a member of the Elk Mt. Ski Patrol during the 1960's and 70's. In 1985, she and Bruce moved to their Union Dale farm full-time, where they happily lived until his death in 2010, having been married for 57 years.
Over the course of her life, she attended Skidmore College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and Keen College, eventually earning a Master's Degree in Psychology. She worked for many years as a School Psychologist for the Montville, NJ Public School System.
In addition to her formal employment, she was an efficient and caring mother to her children and many of their friends, as well as several overseas exchange students who lived in her household for extended periods of time. She rarely missed pitching in on farming chores, and spent innumerable hours fixing fence or unloading hay wagons, although if necessary, could also be counted on for tractor duty as well – such as tedding, raking or bailing hay.
She was active in many social groups including the Clifford Garden Club, and the Clifford Bridge Club, and somehow also found time to volunteer for several community organizations such as the Union Dale Fire Co., Meals-on-Wheels, Planned Parenthood, and Huddle, a local political action group. Each Friday for the past 3 years or so, she has volunteered at a local Drug and Alcohol Rehab facility, providing counseling to patients who seek to recover from their addiction. In 2001, she was recognized by the Women's Resource Center in Scranton as the winner of the Sharon Craig Award, and in 2020 she was honored with the Thomas P. Shelburne Award from the Pennsylvania Environments Council. But, far and away, her most satisfying community achievement was founding, promoting, and supporting the Rail Trail Council of NE PA, and she has been proud to expound upon it merits for health, body and soul, to anyone willing to listen.
She leaves behind four children, B. Elliott Ross (Kim) of Union Dale, PA; Hilary L. Ross (Jim Lennox) of Shickshinny, PA; Jay D. Ross (Leila) of Stowe, VT; and Jessica L. Ross of Naples, FL; also a sister, Virginia Wind (Tom Watkinson) of Flemington, NJ; five granddaughters, Lauren, Abby, Phoebe, Grace and Reyna; as well as three great-grandsons, Billie, Milo and River.
No formal service is planned at this time; however, the family will announce plans for an informal gathering to celebrate her life sometime in the future.
She asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations could be made to a charity of the donor's choice, or to the Rail Trail Council of NE PA.
Arrangements by, Shifler-Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Clifford, PA.
