Obituary

Michael A. Spike Mazza, 71, of Greenfield Township, PA, died Tuesday night, April 29, 2013 at home surrounded by family and friends. Born June 22, 1942 in Carbondale, PA, he was the son of the late Nicholas Spike and Virginia Moro Mazza. He was a 1960 graduate of St. Rose High School, Carbondale and served for four years in the Marine Corps. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed as Vice President of the Operating Engineers, Local 542 in Wilkes Barre, PA. He had also been the owner and operator of the Paradise Inn, Greenfield Township. He played defensive tackle for the Scranton Eagles and was a member of their 1971 Empire League Championship team. He was a member of the FAM Masonic Aurora Lodge # 523 in Jermyn, PA and was a former president of the Scranton Building Trades Council. He enjoyed dancing, Bocce, hunting with his kids and most of all advancing the efforts of organized labor. He is survived by four sons: Michael Mazza, Jr. of Greenfield Township, PA, Christopher Mazza and wife Robin of Newton Lake, PA, Phillip Mazza and companion Gina Grizzanti of Vandling, PA and Chuck Mazza and wife Leslie of Simpson, PA; one sister: Rose Gerace and husband Angelo of Brooklyn, NY; 7 grandchildren: Jaime Minor, Kyle Semanision, Christopher Mazza, Jr., Andrew, Kathleen and Robbie Mazza and Macy Phillips; two great grandchildren: Skout Minor and Aubry Semanision; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother: Dominick Spike Mazza and wife Peggy; his former wife: Kathleen Mazza. The funeral was held Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 8:30 AM from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale, celebrated by Rev. John C. O'Bell, associate pastor. Interment with military honors, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA. Pallbearers: Hank Jones, Patrick Citera, Domenick Marion, David, Nicholas, J.R., Christopher and Andrew Mazza. Friends called Friday, May 2, 2014 from 2-4 6-9 PM.
