Mary A. Scalzo (Booth), 69, of Scott Township, PA, died Monday, January 29, 2024 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital, Plains Township, PA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 21 years, Russell Scalzo on December 29, 2004.

Born June 10, 1954 in Scott Township, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Agnes Porus Howanitz.

Mary was raised in Scott Township and graduated from Lakeland High School. She later went on to become a small business owner having operated several businesses including, bingo halls in Archbald, Carbondale and Mayfield, M & J's Bar and Grill in Archbald and a tire recycling plant in Bloomsburg. She was a member of S.S. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Olyphant.

Mary enjoyed crafts, cooking and baking. She was very close and proud of her children and she will be deeply missed by them.

She is survived by four children: Jennifer Scalzo and husband, Bruce Pitts, Lindsay Scalzo, Antonio Scalzo and Nicholas Scalzo; three grandchildren: Adriana, Kierra and Waylon; one brother: John Howanitz; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter: Nicole Scalzo; and a brother: Martin Howanitz.

The funeral was held Monday, February 5, 2024 from Carmine J. & Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 89 Farview Street, Carbondale, PA, with Devine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m. at S.S. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, 135 N. River Street, Olyphant, PA, celebrated by Rev. Nestor Iwasiw, pastor. Interment, parish cemetery, Peckville, PA.

Pallbearers: Nicholas Scalzo, Antonio Scalzo, Bruce Pitts and John Howanitz.

Viewing hours were held Sunday, February 4, 2024 from 5-8 p.m. Panachida service was held at 6 p.m.
