Obituary

Mary Lou Gillen, 88, formerly of Wilkes Barre, PA, died Thursday night, May 27, 2021 at Smith's Health Care, Mountain Top, PA, where she resided. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Thomas J. Gillen, Jr. on May 19, 2002. Born in Carbondale, PA, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Genevieve Smith Langan. Mary Lou was a 1951 graduate of St. Rose High School, Carbondale, and attended Marywood College. She resided in Wilkes Barre for many years and was a member of St. Theresa's Parish during that time. Mary Lou and Tom spent their retirement years in Sunrise, Florida. She later moved back to the area and resided with her son, Mark in Mountain Top, before becoming a resident at Smith's Health Care. The family would like to thank the entire staff of Smith's Health Care, especially Mary Beilman for the kind, compassionate and dignified care they provided to Mary Lou. She is survived by one daughter: Maribeth and husband, Frank Galko of Newton Lake, PA; three sons: Dr. Thomas Gillen and wife, Mary Jean of Murrysville, PA, Matt Gillen and wife, Lori of Kingston, PA and Mark Gillen and wife, Joanne of Mountain Top, PA; six grandchildren: Danny, Leah, Emma, Elizabeth, Mark and Luke; a great-granddaughter: Fallyn; several nieces and nephews and many cherished cousin's, from both the Smith and Langan branches of the family. She was also preceded in death by her beloved brother: Rev. James Langan in 2005. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Church Street, Carbondale, PA, celebrated by Rev. Kevin Miller, assistant pastor. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA. The family received friends on Thursday, June 3, 2021 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Arrangements were entrusted to Edward A. Wade Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Carbondale, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions were made to the donor's favorite charity.
