Obituary

Marion R. Sterling, age 88, formerly of Forty Fort, PA and Trucksville, PA, transitioned into eternal life on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at the Mountain Top Senior Care and Rehabilitation Center, Mountain Top, PA. At the time of her passing, Marion was under the care of Sacred Heart Hospice. Born in Ashley, PA, Marion was a daughter of the late Oscar and Bertha Flickinger. Marion was a 1943 graduate of Ashley High School and loved to work on the committee for each reunion. Retiring as Audio Visual Librarian from the Luzerne Intermediate Unit (LIU) 18, Marion also served as PSEA Secretary for LIU employees. She was employed several years prior in the Luzerne County Court House Voter Registration Bureau; and she worked on various political campaigns, her last being the 2008 Presidential election. Marion gave tirelessly and generously to the community and those in need. For several years she was an Auxiliary member of Allied Services-John Heinz Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine and served as Past Vice President, Membership Program Chair, and Committee Chair of numerous fund-raising and special events. She also volunteered for We Care, the Salvation Army, and served as Troop Leader for Girl Scouts of America in Trucksville. A progressive thinker and born leader, Marion had a great sense of humor and flourishing creativity. She was Founder and first Queen Mother of the local Lilies of the Valley Chapter of the Red Hat Society. She was also Founder and Past President of the Glenn Miller Society's Northeastern Pennsylvania branch; Founder of Find-A-Mate, and the Good Time Travelers where she organized numerous bus trips to plays, musicals and primarily East Coast destinations. Marion was a past member of the Dallas Women's Choral Club, Irem Temple Women's Auxiliary, and Dallas Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. Marion was a pioneer in benefiting from complementary and alternative medicine. She was an expert seamstress and cook. She loved fun, laughter, children, animals, and making new friends. Marion was preceded in death by her infant brother, John Flickinger; baby daughter, Donna Mae Sterling; former husband Donald G. Sterling; sister, Dorthea Karchin; nephews, Bill Humanski, Jay Jones and Dwight Fink; and beloved pets Dixie and MacDade. Surviving relatives are her son, Robert; daughter, Robyn and husband Walter Kochan; sisters, Helen Fink and Erma Correa; and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements were entrusted to the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Carbondale, PA. Memorial donations were made to: True Friends Animal Welfare Center, 16332 State Route 706, Montrose, PA 18801 or SPCA of Luzerne County, Fox Hill Road, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18704.
