Maria C. Barreca, 76, of Carbondale, PA., died Monday evening, June 22, 2009 at Mercy Hospice, Scranton, PA. She was the wife of John Barreca. They were married 52 years. Born March 26, 1933 in Reggio Calabria, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Mariano and Anna (Sitibondo) Bruno. She and her husband moved to Carbondale from Italy in 1960. She was a retired sewing machine operator having worked in the local garment industry for many years. She was active with the Carbondale Senior Center and was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. She was also a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Carbondale.She enjoyed working on her crafts and was a terrific cook having made many Italian delicacies for her family. Her family was her life, especially her grandchildren. The family would like to send special thanks to the doctors and staff at Moses Taylor Hospital, Mercy Hospice and The Laurels in Peckville, PA., where Maria has resided over the past eight months. Her family is grateful for the kind and compassionate care shown to her during her illness.She is survived by three children: Paul Barreca of Carbondale, PA., Anna Hachan and husband Richard of Carbondale, PA. and Dr. Agatha Barreca and husband Dr. Heath Edwards of Newport, NH.; five grandchildren: Richard Hachan, Jr., Christopher Hachan, Gabriel, Blaise and Marius Edwards; one brother: Giuseppe Bruno of Bari, Italy; two nephews: Sergio and Silvio Bruno of Bari, Italy.The funeral was held Friday, June 26, 2009 at 9:00 AM from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale., celebrated by Rev. Russell E. Motsay, pastor. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA. Friends called Thursday, June 25, 2009 from 4-8 PM. Pallbearers: Richard Hachan, Jr., Christopher Hachan, Steven Wright, David Hachan, James Moro and Bill Brady.
