Lulu Swingle, 85, of Union Dale. PA, died Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Regional Hospital, Scranton, PA. She was the wife of Raymond Swingle.
Born Carbondale, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Viola Rehkop Hendrickson.
Lulu was a graduate of Fell Township High School in Simpson, PA. After her marriage to Ray, she became a farmer's wife and homemaker raising her two daughters. She later worked as a secretary at Elk Mountain Ski Resort, Union Dale. After retiring from farming, she and her husband founded Bingham's Family Restaurant in Lenox, PA. Although known for its home style cooking, the restaurant's success was Lulu's pies, having made 35 fresh one's each day. Lulu and Ray retired from the restaurant business over 10 years ago but Lulu's famous pie receipies are still enjoyed by many locals. She was a faithful and devoted member of the Elkdale Baptist Church of West Clifford, PA. She and Ray enjoyed traveling to many places around the globe and also spending winters in Lake Havasu City, Arizona for the past 20 years. She loved her flowers and was a wonderful and generous wife, mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Carbondale Nursing and Rehab Center for the kind and compassionate care given to Lulu during her stay for the past year.
She is survived by two daughters: Patti White of Newton Lake, PA and Joan Mahoney of Jermyn, PA; four grandchildren: Jennifer Mancuso and husband Michael, Heather Katchmore and husband Jon, Raymond and Stephen Depew; six great grandchildren: Nicholas and Brooklyn Mancuso, Chase and Ella Katchmore, Rhiannon and Lily Depew; one sister: Amber Snyder of Clifford, PA; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers: Paul and John Hendrickson; one sister: Helen Mattero; a granddaughter-in-law: Yvonne Depew. The funeral was held Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at 11:00 AM from the Elkdale Baptist Church of West Clifford, 45 State Route 2014, Clifford Township, PA, with Rev. Frank Bissol, pastor, officiating. Inurnment, Welsh Hill Cemetery, Union Dale, PA.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Shifler-Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Clifford, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions were made in Lulu's name to the Alzheimer's Association, 57 N. Franklin Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701
