Obituary

Master Sergeant Louis C. Chmiel (US Army, Ret.), age 57, of Scranton, PA., died Saturday morning, August 11, 2007 at the Northeast Pennsylvania Gino Merli Veterans Center, Scranton. Born December 7, 1949 in Olyphant, PA., he was the son of the late Felix Martin and Loretta Theresa (Fawcett) Chmiel. He was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale, PA., and retired from the US Army as a Master Sergeant following 24 years of meritorious service. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Division and also served with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC. He was awarded numerous medals, citations and commendations including the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Bronze Star, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Development Ribbon-3, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon-3, Overseas Service Bars-3, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Parachutist Badge, Driver and Mechanic Badge and the Army Achievement Medal. He is survived by two sons: Christopher Chmiel of Maine and John Chmiel and wife Tiffany of Lawton, OK.; twin daughters: Jennifer Chmiel of Lawton, OK. and Rebecca Hunt and husband James of Lawton, OK.; three grandchildren: Ariel Jessica Chmiel and Isaac Hunt; five brothers: Felix Chmiel and wife Marcia of Springfield, VA., Joseph Chmiel and wife Gloria of Carbondale, PA., Robert Chmiel and wife Kathi of Carbondale, PA., David Chmiel of Pittsburgh, PA. and Martin Chmiel of Hershey, PA.; four sisters: Nancy Moran and husband Kevin of Scranton, PA., Carol Evanusa and husband Samuel of Scranton, PA., Theresa Smith and husband Henry of Dunmore, PA. and Loretta Malson and husband David of Carbondale Township, PA.; Several Nieces and Nephews. The funeral and burial with full military honors was held Monday, August 20, 2007 at 11:00 AM in Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, OK. Condolences can be sent to his son John, at the following address: 305 NW Arlington Avenue #E, Lawton, OK 73507. Arrangements in Pennsylvania and Oklahoma were conducted by the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home, Inc., Carbondale, PA.
