Obituary

Laurence J. "Larry" Brown, Jr., 73, of Harford, PA, passed away Sunday, March 5, 2017 under the care of Carbondale Nursing and Rehab Center and Traditional Hospice, Carbondale, PA, with his daughter by his side. His wife, the former Patricia E. Kavetski died on October 27, 2015. Born August 13, 1943 at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, NY, he was the son of the late Laurence J. Brown, Sr. and Grace Benson Brown and was a 1961 graduate of Mt. View High School. Larry served as president and ambulance captain of the Harford Fire Company in the 1970's and was proud that during his tenure Harford was the first company in Susquehanna County to obtain EMT status. He served from 1970 to 1976 in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard as a gunner sergeant in the mechanized infantry. During his service, he went to school for S4 supply battalion level and his group was activated twice. Larry volunteered as a participant in the color/honor guard for Elk Mountain VFW Post 8488 and was awarded a commendation by Post 8488 for his many years of service. He also served the Lord proudly at First Congregational Church of Harford as superintendent of Sunday school. He started working in the local stone quarries at a very young age and later became a jockey horse groomer but eventually settled in as a very talented carpenter, which he did for the rest of his career. In the 1990's, he obtained his real estate license but only worked as an agent for about a year. Larry enjoyed reading, geography, history, helping others, sailing, playing the guitar and piano, and spending time with his pets. He loved playing with his best friends in two bands, the first was the Country Neighbors right here out of Harford and his second band was out in Colorado, called The Wayward's. He played rhythm guitar in both. He is survived by a daughter and daughter-in-law: Amy C. Brown-Whitney and Nicola L. Hartland of Bear, DE; two step grandchildren: Kyra J. and Conner D. Hartland; a sister: Carol Robinson and husband Roger of Elkton, MD; a sister-in-law: Helen Hanf of Lenox Twp., PA; several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a daughter: Ellen Marie Brown; sisters: Pamela Herbert and Sharon Kavetski; brother's-in-law: Frank G. Kavetski, Ronald P. Kavetski, Sr. and David Herbert; nephews and niece: Kenneth Robinson, Martin Kavetski, Steven Swift and Kelly Kavetski. A memorial service was held Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. from the First Congregational Church, 5016 Creek Road, Harford, officiated by Rev. William Hagenbuch, pastor. Interment with military honors followed at the Harford Cemetery. Friends called Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the church Arrangements were entrusted to Shifler-Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Clifford, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations were made to the Harford First Congregational Church, the Harford Fire Department or the Elk Mountain VFW Post 8488.
