Josephine Pantana Scalzo, 90, passed away Tuesday morning, October 26, 2021 at Geisinger CMC, Scranton, PA, after a brief illness. Born January 22, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Josephine Grecco Pantana, and was a lifelong resident of Carbondale, PA. Her former spouse, Russell Scalzo, passed in 2005. Josephine was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Carbondale her entire life. She was devout in her faith, and one of her daily pleasures was reading from her Bible. She also loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, and cooking their favorite cheese balls, broccoli patties, and minaestra for them every Sunday. She is survived by three children; Joseph Scalzo and spouse, Angela of Carbondale, PA; Marlene McConchie and spouse, Andrew of Davie FL; and Michele Scalzo of Carbondale, PA; a son-in-law: Steve Gilia of Carbondale, PA; eight grandchildren; Jason Scalzo and spouse, Gail of Manassas VA, Michael McConchie of Denver CO, Kristen Gilia of West Chester, PA, Mallory McConchie of Boca Raton FL, Stephen Gilia of Simpson, PA, Joseph Scalzo Jr. of Scranton, PA, Richard Hill and spouse, Stephanie of Archbald, PA and Mason McConchie of Pampano Beach FL.; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a daughter: Mary Lou Scalzo Gilia; a son: Russell Scalzo, Jr.; and six siblings; Lawrence Pantana, Angelo Pantana, Joseph Pantana, Rose Pantana Pettinato, Grace Pantana Pagliaro, and Mary Pantana Jankauskas. A Catholic blessing service was held Saturday, October 30, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. from the Carmine J. and Louis C. Parise Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 89 Farview Street, Carbondale, PA.
