Obituary

Joseph J. Wagner, Sr., 77, of Carbondale, PA., died Saturday afternoon, December 1, 2012 at home. His love for his wife the former Janet Barnicott was 59 years strong. They were married on July 2, 1955. Born July 26, 1935 in Carbondale, PA., he was the son of the late Walter, Sr. and Sophie Anasavage Wagner. He was a graduate of the Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and was an Air Force veteran having served during the Korean War. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by the Pennsylvania Gas and Water Company for 38 years and later as a transportation coordinator for NHS Human Services in Carbondale. He along with his son Joseph and Richard Burko were the owners and operators of RJ Wagner Trucking in Carbondale. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale, American Legion Post 808 of Pleasant Mount, PA., 4-H Club, American Quarter Horse Association and the Cottage Hose Ambulance Company of Carbondale. Joseph was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend. He shared a lifetime of friendship and love with his Best Bud, Richard Burko. You rarely ever saw one without the other. The truly were partners in crime forever. Joseph will be remembered for his love of family, he enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren daily. Joseph was considered a father to many. His love for horses was life long from the time he was a boy. He had many happy years with special friends and talked about his horses everyday of his life. Papa Joe was a fixture at his favorite summer event the Harford Fair. He will be remembered for his honesty and integrity and always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone. His family finds comfort in knowing he is on that eternal trail ride with his son, Joseph. Our deepest and heartfelt appreciation goes to Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the kind and compassionate care the provided to Joseph and our family. He is survived by four daughters: Kathy Brown of Carbondale, PA., Karen Lynady of Richmondale, PA., Jennifer Smith of Scotrun, PA. and Karen Mazur of Carbondale, PA.; two sons: Patrick Battle of Carbondale, PA. and William Battle of San Diego, CA.; five brothers: Walter Wagner, Jr. of Newton Lake, PA., Leo Wagner of Carbondale, PA., William Wagner, Sr. of Montdale, PA., Gerald Wagner of Union Dale, PA. and David Wagner of Carbondale, PA.; two sisters: Mary Snipes of Jermyn, PA. and Ann Gillette of Carbondale, PA.; twenty grandchildren: Lindsay Yetter, Joseph R. Wagner, Sr., Kaitlyn Brown, Emily Brown, John J. Lynady, Patrick S. Battle, Allyson Lynady, Jessica Battle, Rachael Battle, Kelsea Smith, Zoey Battle, Daniel Battle, Matthew Battle, Brandon Battle, Abigayle Lynady, Mason Battle, Brianne Smith, Valerie Battle, Jason Lynady and Chad Lynady; four great grandchildren: Bryden and Connor Yetter; Joseph R. Wagner, Jr. and Eric Race; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son: Joseph J. Wagner, Jr., who died January 8, 1990. The funeral was held Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at 10:00 AM from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale, with Sister Jane Connolly of St. Rose of Lima Parish, Carbondale and Pastor Margaret Hartman, of the First Presbyterian Church of Nicholson, PA., co-officiating. Interment, Willow View Cemetery, Clifford, PA. Friends called Tuesday, December 4, 2012 from 4-8 PM. Pallbearers: Joseph Wagner, Sr., Patrick Battle, Kyle Smith, John Lynady, Sr., John Lynady, Jr., David Carrol, Jr., John Mazur and Michael Yetter. Military honors were provided by the Simpson Honor Guard of the VFW Post 4712. Memorial contributions were made to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive, Wilkes Barre, PA 18702.
