Joseph L. Rooster Szymaszek, 83, of Carbondale, PA., died early Thursday morning, May 27, 2010 at the Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale. He was the husband of the former Stasia Novobilski. They were married on September 29, 1956.
Born December 13, 1926 in Mayfield, PA., he was the son of the late Walter and Margaret (Brady) Szymaszek.
He was a navy veteran and had been employed for 35 years as a cutter at the Scranton Bedding Company, Scranton, PA. He was a bartender at the Pioneer Inn of Carbondale for over 20 years. He especially enjoyed bartending on Saturday afternoons and spending time with his close friends. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, the Moxie Club and the American Legion, Post 221 all of Carbondale and the Elk Mountain VFW, Post 8488, Kingsley, PA.
He was an avid New York Yankees and Penn State football fan. He enjoyed going to the casinos in Atlantic City, playing cards and fishing.
He is survived by one son: Joseph Szymaszek and wife Christine of Carbondale, PA.; one daughter: Ellen Ciampi and husband Joseph of Wyoming, PA.; three grandchildren: Tiffany Szymaszek of Vermont, Todd Szymaszek of Carbondale, PA. and Blaise Ciampi of Wyoming, PA.; two nieces.
He was preceded in death by one sister: Mary Chervanka.
The funeral was held Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 8:30 AM from the Edward A. Wade Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 4 Morris Place at Terrace Street, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 AM in St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Church Street, Carbondale, celebrated by Rev. William D. Campbell, senior priest. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA.
Military honors were provided by the VFW Honor Guard, Post 4712, Simpson, PA.
Pallbearers: Todd Szymaszek, Blaise Ciampi, Edward Gramer, Edward Bognatz, Marty, Robert, Michael and William Andrews.
