Joseph Monahan, 73, of Carbondale, PA, died Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at Aventura at Terrace View, in Sturges, PA, following an illness.

Born July 31, 1949 in Carbondale, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph Sr., and Nan Hughes Monahan.

Joe graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School and was a veteran of the US Army. He served in Vietnam and was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in theatre. After an honorable discharge, he served in the Reserves/National guard for many years. After leaving active duty, he attended and graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Scranton.

He worked at the Tobyhanna Army Depot in the radar/electronics division until his retirement. After his retirement, he worked part time on the grounds crew at Elkview Country Club where he took great pride in the care of the flowerbeds and plants that adorn the course.

In his younger years he was an active runner, golfer, and SCUBA diver. He was also an accomplished DIY'er and mechanic and would often be found working on various projects around his home. He was also an avid outdoorsman and made many trips throughout the United States on hunting excursions with his most memorable being a hunting trip to Alaska.

He is survived by three nephews; two great nephews; a brother-in-law; and several cousins.

He was also preceded in death by his sister: Anne (Nancy) Maida

The funeral was held Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. from Carmine J. & Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 89 Farview Street, Carbondale, PA. Interment with military honors, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA.
