Joseph A. Kilhullen, Sr., a lifelong resident of Carbondale, PA,, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at home with his loving family at his side. His wife of 49 years is the former Nancy Parker.
Born in Carbondale, PA., he was the son of the late Ambrose and Elizabeth (Thompson) Kilhullen.
He was educated in Carbondale public schools and was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale. He was a lifelong member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. He was honorably discharged from the Navy after serving for four years during the Korean War. He retired from both Farview State Hospital and the Carbondale Area High School maintenance department. He was a hardworking man and a very charitable person.
In the past, he was a loving caretaker for his parents and mother-in-law. He supported various charities and was a former volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels. He was an avid New York Yankees fan and in his younger days was a member of various local softball teams and often the winning pitcher. He also was an avid hunter.
He loved to hear about his grandchildren's activities, especially sporting events. He was a loving and generous husband, a loving and always concerned father and a loving and proud grandfather. His family will always cherish his memory and he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family would like to thank Dr. Joseph Greco in Dunmore and the Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their kind and compassionate care, especially Kathy Gillette, Debbie Fiore, Annie Pepsin and staff.
He is survived by four children: Joseph Kilhullen, Jr. and wife Cindy of Carbondale Township, PA., Susan Hartzell and husband Carl of Clarks Summit, PA., Jill Kerl and husband Billy of Simpson, PA. and Josh Kilhullen and fiance Charlene Battle of Jermyn, PA.; three sisters: Debbie Cosman of Florida, Arlene Carr of Nevada and Grace Matouscak of New Jersey; five brothers: Bobby Kilhullen of Pennsylvania, Vincent Kilhullen of Missouri, Jimmy Kilhullen of New Jersey, Marty Kilhullen of Arizona and Ambrose Kilhullen of Pennsylvania; fourteen grandchildren: Kristi, Kelli, Kara, Joseph, Cody, Candice, Joey, Katie, Emily, Jacob, Ryan, Brad, Parker and Joshua; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister: Eleanor Brennan.
The funeral was held Monday, March 1, 2010 at 10:00 AM from the Edward A. Wade Funeral Home Cremation Services, Inc., 4 Morris Place at Terrace Street, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM in St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 North Church Street, Carbondale, celebrated by Rev. William D. Campbell, senior priest. Interment with military honors by the Simpson VFW Post 4712 Honor Guard at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA.
Friends called Sunday, February 28, 2010 from 6-9 PM.
