Obituary

Joseph P. Roscoe Gazella, Sr., age 90, of Carbondale, PA., died late Saturday evening, April 17, 2010 at home surrounded by his family. His wife of 64 years is the former Mary L. Aileo. Born June 29, 1919 in Jermyn, PA., he was the son of the late Justin and Mary (Ziemba) Gazella. He was educated in the Archbald School District and worked for many years at Gentex Corporation, Simpson, PA., and Dearborn Glass Company, Jermyn. He was an Army veteran during World War II and served as a Private First Class in Rhineland, Normandy and Northern France. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received on August 7, 1944 in St. Lo France. He also received the American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Service Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal and 3 Bronze Stars. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale and the Cerra-Leo DAV, Carbondale. He was an avid Detroit Tigers fan, enjoyed his monthly trips to the casino and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandson. He is survived by three sons: Joseph Gazella, Jr. of Carbondale, PA., Frank Gazella, Sr. and wife Denise of Virginia Beach, VA. and Victor Gazella, Sr. and wife Mary of Whites Crossing, PA.; five grandchildren: Lori Gazella, Frank Gazella, Jr., Leiann Gazella, Heather Gazella and Victor Gazella, Jr., all of Carbondale, PA; one great grandson: Collin Michael Gazella of Carbondale, PA.; several nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by one daughter: Ann Marie Hivish; six brothers: John, Paul, Peter, Carl, Steven and Frank Gazella; three sisters: Jean Kulas, Sophie Garger and Agnes Tickey. The funeral was held Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at 10:00 AM from the Edward A. Wade Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 4 Morris Place at Terrace Street, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM in St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 North Church Street, Carbondale, celebrated by Rev. Joseph Elston, chaplain of Hospice of the Sacred Heart. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA. Military honors were conducted by the 1st Battalion of the 109th Infantry. Pallbearers: Frank Gazella, Jr., Victor Gazella, Jr., Kyle Nepa, Fred Aileo, John Aileo and Jerry Pedley. Friends called Monday, April 19, 2010 from 4-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions were sent to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive, Wilkes-Barre, PA. 18702.
