Joseph F. Red Cerra, Jr., 69, of Kingsley, PA., died Saturday night, December 8, 2012 at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton, PA.
Born January 17, 1943 in Carbondale, PA., he was the son of the late Joseph F., Sr. and Rose DeAntonio Cerra.
He was a 1960 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and was a retired Corrections Officer at Farview State Hospital in Waymart, PA. He had also been employed in his family's business, Cerra's Bottling Works, Carbondale. He was the founder of the Swinemeister, a catering business. He also served as a Pennsylvania State Constable.
He was a Charter Member and President of the Harford Sportsman Association, Harford, PA.; the Carbondale Masonic Lodge 249, where he served as a former Worshipful Master and was currently a member of the Harford Lodge #445; a member of the Pioneer Rangers Hunting Club, Carbondale; the Elks Lodge, Binghamton, NY; the Moose Lodge 794, Susquehanna, PA. and the Moxie Club, Carbondale. He was a social member of the VFW Elk Mountain Post 8488, Lenox, PA.
Red was an avid hunter, who liked reloading and his time at the camp's rifle range. He also enjoyed cooking and the annual tradition of making sopressata and wine with his family. He loved the San Francisco Giants and was also a long-suffering fan of the Minnesota Vikings.
He is survived by two daughters, Michele Piatt and husband William of Crystal Lake, PA. and Ann Marie Ohmnacht of Cresco, PA.; two sons, Joseph F. Cerra, III and wife Jean Marie and Justin J. Cerra, all of Kingsley, PA.; five grandchildren; Dr. Nicole Piatt-Apple and husband Dr. Andrew and Danielle Piatt, David Ohmnacht, Jr., Cerra Ohmnacht, and Joseph F. Cerra IV; one brother, Angelo J. Cerra and wife Beverly, Carbondale, PA.; two sisters: Rosanna Gallo, Carbondale, PA. and Patricia Misura and husband Mark, Carbondale, PA.; several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law: David Chip Ohmnacht.
The funeral was held Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale, celebrated by Rev. John C. O'Bell, associate pastor. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill, PA.
