John A. Starzer, 59, of Carbondale, PA., died Thursday night, September 23, 2010 at home after a brief illness. He was the husband of the former Linda Coxe. The couple celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary in July.
Born in East Orange, NJ., he was the son of Elaine K. Starzer and the late Rev. Charles F.J. Starzer.
He was a 1968 graduate of the Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and received his BS degree in Elementary Education from Elizabethtown College and his MS degree in Elementary Administration from the University of Scranton, Scranton, PA.
He taught at the former Washington and Roosevelt Elementary schools in Carbondale, and remedial mathematics at the former St. Rose and Our Lady of Mount Carmel parochial schools, of Carbondale, the Fell Elementary and Carbondale Area Elementary Schools. He also taught classes at Lackawanna College in both their Scranton and Honesdale campuses. He was a member of Pennsylvania State Education Association.
He was a member, Elder and Trustee of the Waymart Presbyterian Church, Waymart, PA., and a former Deacon, Elder and Youth Fellowship Advisor of the First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale.
He was a loving husband, son, brother and uncle. He took great pride in his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.
The family would especially like to thank James Burke for his kindness.
He is survived by one sister: Miriam C. Baker, R.N. of Port Jervis, NY.; two brothers: Paul Starzer of Carbondale, PA. and Rev. Dr. Stephen W. Starzer of Conklin, NY.; two cousins; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Carbondale.
