Obituary

John Anthony Serafini, 84, of Smithtown, NY, died peacefully on Sunday, December 27, 2015 at Huntington Hospital, Huntington, NY, surrounded by his family. Born in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, loving husband of 58 years to the late Joanne (DeLuca) Serafini and son of the late Anna (Mussari) and Tullio Serafini, John was a 1949 graduate of Saint Rose High School. He served in the 28th Infantry Division of the Pennsylvania National Guard. After training for the Korean War in Germany in 1950, John returned home to become the Company E Administrator for the 109th Infantry, Carbondale. John married his beautiful girlfriend, Joanne DeLuca, in 1956 and earned his degree from the University of Scranton in Business and Accounting. He began his career at Sears, Roebuck and Company relocating several times before settling in Commack, New York. After 30 years of service at Sears, John retired and continued his career working with his long-time friend at DMA. He is survived by his two daughters and spouses; Denise (Paul) Duane of Columbia, South Carolina and Diane (Joseph) Maggio of Commack, New York; 5 loving grandchildren, John Ryan Duane, Christopher Duane, Kristen Maggio, Jenna Maggio and Erica Duane; his brother, Robert Serafini of Carbondale, Pennsylvania and his loving extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Elizabeth (Betty Lou) Serafini and Anna Mae Graziano. The family has deep appreciation for all the family and friends who expressed their concern and provided support during John's illness and to the many doctors and caregivers of Huntington Hospital who worked tirelessly in supporting John's health. The funeral was held Thursday, December 31, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. from the Carmine J. and Louis C. Parise Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Carbondale, celebrated by Rev. Andrew Kurovsky, senior priest and Deacon Edward Casey. Entombment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA. Pallbearers: Robert Serafini, Paul Duane, John Ryan Duane, Christopher Duane, Joseph Maggio and Joseph Graziano.
