John M. Nielsen, 84, of Simpson, PA, died Friday, January 10, 2014 at home. He was the husband of the late Jeanette L. Nielsen who died on July 22, 1986. Born July 1, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Alexander and Grace Thorn Nielsen. He was a former resident of Brooklyn, New York and was an Army veteran. While residing in Brooklyn he had been employed by the postal service as a mail carrier. He later retired from the Tobyhanna Army Depot. He had a great love for animals and compassionately cared for many neighborhood stray pets. He also enjoyed watching and photographing the many wild animals that wandered into his back yard. He deeply missed his faithful companion, Teddy. He is survived by one sister: Doris Suarez of Lady Lake, FL; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five siblings: Anna Sabella, Grace Dunning, Augusta Young, Alexander Nielsen and Louise Delancey. The funeral will be held Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at 6:00 PM from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale, PA, with Rev. Donald Schaible, pastor of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Carbondale, officiating. Spring interment with military honors, Willow View Cemetery, Clifford, PA.
