John DeCavage, 91, of Forest City, PA., died Sunday afternoon, April 22, 2007 at Forest City Nursing Home where he had resided for the past two years. He was the husband of the former Sophie Skrobak, who died August 18, 2002.
Born November 11, 1915 in Lenoxville, PA., he was the son of the late Joseph and Josephine Anna Kasziwska DeCavage. John was one of the premier flagstone quarry operators in Northeastern Pennsylvania having owned and operated a quarry for 38 years. During World War II, he served in the Navy as a Boatswains Mate and Master-at-Arms. He was a member of the Lenoxville United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Clifford Volunteer Fire Company, Clifford, PA. He enjoyed fishing, golf and playing the slots. He was a talented old-time fiddler and musician. Over the years his group entertained thousands at carnivals, social gatherings and local events. John's music has been recorded and preserved at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. A renowned woodworker, he made fifteen violins, three guitars and two mandolins along with over 100 marquetry pictures from natural wood with no stains or dyes for coloring. His most famous works were the Last Supper, the Good Shepard, and many country scenes with deer, horses, sleighs, flowers, and local men and women. He will be remembered as a kind, good natured and hard working family man who made numerous, lasting contributions to society.
He is survived by three sons: Allan DeCavage and wife Margie of Gilbert, AZ., Martin DeCavage and wife Marion of Ransom, PA. and John Joseph DeCavage and wife Nadine of Beltsville, MD.; seven grandchildren: Gary DeCavage of Factoryville, PA., Martin DeCavage of West Pittston, PA., Jodi Sheats of Middletown, DE., Amy Domiano of Old Forge, PA., Theresa Walters of Scranton, PA., Vanessa Hodge of Alexandria, VA. and Melissa DeCavage of Virginia Beach, VA.; five great grandchildren: Morgan and Matthew Sheats, Camryn Domiano, Kristen and Nicole Walters. He was preceded in death by five brothers: Anthony, Charles, Michael, Adam and Joseph DeCavage; two sisters: Helen Taugher and Minnie Page; three half brothers: Sylvester, Frank and Stanley Shinoski; one half sister: Annie Rotusky. The funeral was held Friday, April 27, 2007 at 11:00 AM from the Lenoxville United Methodist Church, Lenoxville, with services by Pastor Peg Knapich. Interment, Willow View Cemetery, Clifford.
