John J. Calafut, 85, of Carbondale, PA., died Thursday night, June 21, 2012 at the Forest City Nursing Home, Forest City, PA.
Born December 8, 1926 in Carbondale, PA., he was the son of the late Frank Calafut and the late Kathryn Novabilski Calafut Potochak.
He was a graduate of the Fell High School in Simpson, PA. and was a World War II Army veteran having served with the 346th Harbor Craft Company in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. He was a retired steel worker having been employed for many years at Harris Steel in South Plainfield, NJ. He was a member of the Steel Workers Union, the VFW Walter Paciga Post, 4712 in Simpson and St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale, PA.
He enjoyed fishing and watching movies. He loved watching baseball and always rooted for the under dog in sports. He cherished spending time with his family and friends. He was the most loving and caring grandfather and was like a second father to his grandchildren. Nothing in life gave him greater pleasure than being a part of his grandchildren's lives. He will be deeply missed by them.
He is survived by four grandchildren: Jerome Calafut of Olyphant, PA., Christina Ross and husband Dan of Kingsley, PA., Jennifer Calafut and fiancee Tracy Hollister of Archbald, PA. and Stacey Kucharski and husband Jeff of Scott Township, PA.; two great grandsons: Zachary John Ross and Jeffrey John Kucharski; two sisters: Nellie Payne of Plainfield, NJ. and Mary Savage a resident of the Forest City Nursing Home, Forest City, PA.; a daughter-in-law: Loretta Cowher of Carbondale, PA.; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son: Jerome Calafut; two brothers: Edward and Frank Calafut; two sisters: Helen Calafut and Sophie Klosky; a special niece: Joan Klosky.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at 9:00 AM from the St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Church Street, Carbondale. Interment with military honors, St. Michael's Cemetery, Simpson, PA.
Friends called Tuesday, June 26, 2012 from 8:30 to 9:00 AM at the church.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Edward A. Wade Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Carbondale, PA.
