Obituary

James F. Tierney, Jr., 82, of Chapman Lake, PA, died Thursday, May 7, 2026 at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton, PA. He is survived by his wife and best friend Diane (Dance) Tierney. They were married January 31, 1987.

Born October 3, 1943 in Carbondale, PA, he was the son of the late James and Hilda (Walsh) Tierney.

He was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School and after graduation enlisted in the US Marine Corps at the age of 17. He served during the Vietnam War and worked as a crash crew fire and rescue man. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal after 4 years of service.

He worked for 25 years as a maintenance engineer and locksmith for the Tobyhanna Army Depot and enjoyed a long and happy retirement. He enjoyed making toy boxes for his grandchildren, refinishing furniture and hunting which was his passion. He also enjoyed his fishing trips with his grandchildren, target practice and riding his quad on the mountain.

He enjoyed his daily lunch with the crew at the Finch Hill Diner. The family would like to thank Valone & Sefki, owners of the diner, for keeping him healthy all these years.

He was a member of the American Legion 465, Jermyn and VFW.

He is also survived by four children: Kelly Munley of Carbondale, PA, James F. Tierney, IV. and wife, Suzy of Greenfield Township, PA; Tara Golenski and husband, Stephen of North Abington Township, PA, and Shannon Penzone of Jermyn, PA; twelve grandchildren: Jimmy, Cameron, Devan, Max, Brynn, Zachary, Riley, Casey, Molly, Colin, Morgan and Reese; four great grandchildren: Madelyn, Zachary, Jr. Bellamy and Ruby; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter: Ellen Tierney Talarico; one brother: Tom Tierney, and two sisters: Catherine Davidson and Barbara Ackemann.

Private services were held at the convenience of the family. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA.

Arrangements are under the care of the Carmine J. & Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services. Inc., Carbondale, PA.
