James T. Hess, 70, of Carbondale, PA, died Wednesday evening, November 14, 2014 at Regional Hospital, Scranton, PA. His companion for 29 years is Lorraine Calabrese. Born October 12, 1944 in Carbondale, PA, he was the son of the late Floyd and Anna Mae Carey Hess.
Jim attended Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and earned his GED in the Army. He served during the Vietnam War and was a hawk missile instructor stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas and also served in Korea.
In his earlier years, he worked for Gillen Coal Company, Carbondale and later worked as a self employed carpenter for many years and also for Dave's Mobile Homes, Scranton and Endless Mountains Mobile Homes. Jim was an avid quad rider and made so many friends over the years belonging to local quad clubs. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and feeding squirrels.
He is survived by one son: James "Jake" Hess and wife Robin of Pocono Lake, PA; one daughter: Marie Welch of Gouldsboro, PA; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two brothers: Eugene Hess of Ravenel, SC and David Hess and wife Marlene of Scranton, PA; one sister: Kathleen Maila of Newton Lake, PA; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter: Lisa Hess; one granddaughter: Danielle Hess; one sister: Beatrice Rizzi. A memorial service with military honors was held by his family on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at 3:00 PM from the Carmine J. & Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale. Friends called Sunday, November 16, 2014 from 2-4 PM.
