Obituary

James J. Henning, 92, of Carbondale, PA, died Saturday, January 29, 2022 at home surrounded by his family after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years the former, Ann Marie Murray on June 6, 2006. Born November 13, 1929 in Astoria, Queens, NY, he was the son of the late Henry and Catherine Krell Henning. Jim started his career working for American Airlines at the LaGuardia Airport in New York City. After moving to Pennsylvania, he was employed by Daystrom Industries, Archbald, PA. He later retired from Farview State Hospital, Waymart, PA, where he was a psychiatric aid. He was active in the community having been a long-time member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Columbia Hose Company, Trinity Club and the Moxie Club all of Carbondale. Jim was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale, and a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Archbald Council 2048. He was also a dedicated 20-year volunteer for the American Red Cross. The family would like to thank Traditional Hospice and Lori Hayes at Haley Family Practice for their kind and compassionate care. Jamie, Maria, Joe and Cathy would like to extend a special thank you to their brother, Billy for his daily care to their father over the past five years. He is survived by three sons: James F. "Jamie" Henning and wife, Betsy, William H. Henning and Joseph B. Henning all of Carbondale, PA; two daughters: Maria Knapp and husband, James of Pleasant Mount, PA and Catherine Rivenburgh of Baldwinsville, NY; ten grandchildren: Jamie, Janel, Darcell, Justine, Thomas, Tara, Arianna, Cassidy, Brittany and Rebecca; four great grandchildren; three nieces who he was a surrogate father to: Mary Russo, Kathleen Rosler-Cuce and Alice Rau as well as, several other nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a grandson: Shane Rivenburgh; and five siblings: Howard, Mary, Charles, Donald and Nora. The funeral was held Wednesday, February 2, 2022 from Edward A. Wade Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 4 Morris Place at Terrace Street, Carbondale, PA, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Church Street, Carbondale, PA, celebrated by Rev. Jeffrey Walsh, pastor. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA. Pallbearers: Nick Henning, T.J. Knapp, Jamie Henning, Jr., Michael McVeigh, Richard Smith and Wayne Hallstead. Viewing hours were held Tuesday, February 1, 2022 from 5-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions were made in Jim's name to the American Red Cross, Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter, 256 N.
