James E. Miller, Sr., 75, Carbondale, PA, died Monday, October 20, 2014 at Regional Hospital, Scranton, PA, after an illness. He is survived by his wife of 46 years the former Margaret Siefring. Born in Scranton, PA, he was the son of the late Albert and Clarissa Tiffany Miller. Jim was a graduate of West Scranton High School and Indiana University where he attended on a football scholarship, having played center and linebacker for the Hoosiers. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed as a business and accounting teacher for the Carbondale Area School District.
Coach Miller began his coaching career in football as an assistant coach for Lackawanna Trail and Scranton Tech and later served as head coach of the Carbondale Area Chargers. For 36 years, he was a PIAA football official and was recently inducted into the PIAA Sports Hall of Fame.
He was an avid golfer and member of the Elkview Country Club. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale and sang in the choir. He was also a Navy veteran having served in the Vietnam War and was a member of the American Legion Post 221, Carbondale.
He cherished his family and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
The family extends their thanks to the staff of the Carbondale Nursing and Rehab Center for the kind and compassionate care they provided to Jim during his illness.
He is survived by one daughter: Susan Miller and companion Amy Thomas of Carbondale, PA; one son: James Miller, Jr. and wife Renee of Archbald, PA; five grandchildren: Joshua, Emma, Grace, Claire and Jamie Miller; two brothers: William and David Miller; several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held Friday, October 24, 2014 at 11:00 AM from the Carmine J. & Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale, with Rev. Wayne Wolfe, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Cremation followed the service. Military honors were provided by the U.S. Navy and the Simpson VFW Post 4712 Honor Guard.
