Obituary

Helen Caroline Costantino, formerly of Carbondale, PA., passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at the Gracedale Nursing Home, Nazareth, PA. She was the widow of Lewis J. Costantino, who was the owner of Lew's Barber Shop in Simpson, PA., and died in 1977. Born January 29, 1917 in Whites Crossing, PA, she was one of sixteen children of the late John (Johann) and Josephine (Kozlowski/Kozlowska) Sarnoski. She resided in Carbondale at 20 Jeffrey Street and lived independently until she was 90 years old, at which time she went to live with her daughter and son-in-law for several years. She resided for a short time at Saucon Valley Manor Assisted Living, in Hellertown, PA before moving to Gracedale in early 2012. She worked for over 50 years as a seamstress at the Carbondale Children's Dress Factory before retiring in 1977. She was a life-long member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale, PA. She was a wonderful cook and baker (especially for her apple pies), and continually encouraged family members to carry on their ethnic traditions. She loved to read, especially books on ancient history, anthropology and geography. Although never completing her formal education because of her need to help support her family, she continued to informally educate herself throughout her life. She is survived by one daughter: Judith wife of William Douglas Thompson of Bethlehem, PA.; three brothers: Valentine Sarnoski of Vestal, NY., Thaddeus Sarnoski and wife Dorie of Whites Crossing, PA. and Francis Sarnoski and wife Grace of Carbondale, PA.; two sisters: Matilda (Bebe) Spodnewski of Schenectady, NY. and Regina (Ginka) Arthur and husband David of Vandling, PA.; as well as many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and godchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers: Joseph Sarnoski (recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor in WW II), Walter Sarnosky, John Sarnoski and Charles Sarnoski; six sisters: Jenny Manarchuck, Sally Strekel, Victoria Girard, Nellie Dukarich, Agnes Rembisz and Martha Nelson. The funeral was held Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 10:15 AM from the Edward A. Wade Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 4 Morris Place at Terrace Street, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM in St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 North Church Street, Carbondale, celebrated by Rev. John C. O'Bell, associate pastor. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA. Pallbearers: Kevin Coolican, Joseph, John, Thomas, David and Charles Sarnoski. Friends called Thursday, September 27, 2012 from 9:00 - 10:15 AM at the funeral home. Memorial contributions were made in Helen's memory to St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N.
