George J. "Whitey" Chermak, 84, of North Scranton, PA, died Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton, PA. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Sophie Shola, on November 2, 2012. Born July 21, 1934 in Scranton, PA, he was the son of the late George "Hank" and Ann Chernesky Chermak. Whitey began his career with the Chamberlain Corporation and later operated a bar and a garage in North Scranton for several years. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1999 after 24 years of employment as a mechanic at their Stafford Avenue location. He was a member and officer at the Taurus Club in North Scranton for many years. He also belonged to the Polish Club and Mary Mother of God Parish in North Scranton. Whitey's outgoing personality endeared him to the many friends that he made over the years. Fondly called Sonny by his family, he will be remembered for always wearing his blue Dickies uniform and having a cigar clenched in his teeth. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by one sister: Joan Yontas of Scranton, PA; a daughter; eight niece and nephews: Maureen Siciliano, Ann Dolinsky, John Jones, Frank Pagnotti, Rose Krupskas, Debbie Parise, Carol Cook and Michelle Sgobba; several great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces and great great nephews; two step grandchildren: Chuck Primich and Sharon Boandl. He was also preceded in death by two sisters: Helen Jones and Rita Pagnotti; and a step son: Charles "Chic" Primich. The funeral was held Tuesday, January 29, 2019 from Howard J. Snowdon Funeral Home, 1810 Sanderson Avenue, Scranton, PA, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in Mary Mother of God Parish, 316 William Street, Scranton, PA, celebrated by Rev. Martin Gaiardo, senior priest and Deacon Jan Mroz. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton, PA.
