Obituary

Garfield (Garry) D. Thomas, 63, of East Benton, PA., died early Tuesday, May 30, 2006 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on Route 438 in Benton Township, PA. He was the husband of the former Madeline (Madge) Smargiassi who died January 26, 2001. Born April 5, 1943 in Peckville, PA., he was the son of the late William Garfield and Helen (Foley) Thomas. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a heavy equipment operator by serveral area construction companies. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served in the Marine Corps. He was a member of the VFW Post 5937 of Dickson City, PA., the VFW Post 7069 of Clarks Summit, PA. and the DAV Chapter II of Dickson City, PA. He was a member of the T-Bird Club and a former member of the Coal Crackers. He was a pilot and flew his own Cessna airplane. He loved and owned antique cars and tractors. He is survived by two sisters: Leona (Lee) Pilkonis of East Benton, PA. and Arline Olecki of Port Richie, FL.; one niece: Kimberly Valente of Waymart, PA.; one grandnephew and grandniece: Joseph C. and Casey Lee Valente He was preceded in death by one brother: William Thomas; one sister: Dorothy Ephalt The funeral was held Friday, June 2, 2006 at 10:00 am from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home, Inc., Farview and 41st Streets, Carbondale. A committal service was conducted by Rev. Catherine Parsons, pastor of the East Benton and Montdale United Methodist Churchs at the East Benton Cemetery, East Benton. Military Services and Honor Guard was provided by the American Legion Post 665 of Dickson City, PA. Friends called Thursday, June 1, 2006 from 6-8 PM and Friday, June 2, 2006 from 9:30 to 10:00 AM In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Humane Society of Lackawanna County, 967 Griffin Pond Road, Clarks Summit, PA 18411 Pallbearers: Robert Bronson, Paul Bobersky, Gary Scott, Joseph Valente, Brad Dutter and Clair Young.
