Gale Y. Morris-Dunkle, 83, of Lack Haven, PA, and formerly of Olean, NY; Tampa, FL; and the Washington, DC area, died Sunday, September 21, 2025 at Heartland Retirement Personal Care Home, Woolrich, PA.
Born November 3, 1941 in Olean, NY, she was the daughter of the late James R. and Dorthea Mae Helser Morris.
Gale enlisted in the regular Army in 1973 at age 30 during The Vietnam War. She later enlisted in the Army Active Reserves in 1979 and then the Army Individual Ready Reserves in 1981. She received her last Honorable discharge in 1984. She continued to serve our country as a Department of Defense civilian, first with the Army and then the Navy until her retirement in October of 2002.
Gale was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Good Conduct Medal. She received numerous military and civilian letters of commendation and appreciation and non-degree diplomas during her 29 years with the Department of Defense.
Gale was a member of The American Legion, Disabled Veterans of America, Vietnam Veterans Association, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Auxiliary and a member of numerous other religious, civic and community organizations.
Gale graduated from Hillsborough High School, Tampa, Florida and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Houston (TX), an Associate of Arts from St. Petersburg Community College (FL) and an Associate of Science from Northern Virginia Community College. She loved learning and continued taking courses on-line, on-campus or correspondence in various academic areas throughout her life. She loved music and played the violin. She wanted to see the whole world, its people and their cultures and did live in Japan for three years and traveled on 3 continents, 16 countries and 23 of our States.
She is survived by her husband of 11 years, Herbert Marland Dunkle of Lock Haven, PA; one sister: Sharon D. Boroch of Chester, VA; three nieces; several great nieces and great nephews; a cousin: Howard Helser of Coon Rapids, MN.
A Catholic Committal Service with military honors was held Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, 60 Indiantown Gap Road, Annville, PA.
