Evelynn D. Terri Deren, 72, a lifelong resident of Carbondale, PA., died Sunday afternoon, February 21, 2010 at Community Medical Center, Scranton, PA., after a brief battle with cancer. She was the wife of John J. Jack Deren. They were married September 29, 1971.
Born February 13, 1938 in Carbondale, PA., she was the ninth child of the late Stanley and Teresa (Seegner) Thompson.
After growing up in such a large family, Terri understands the true meaning of giving and family. Helping others has always been part of her daily life. She was appointed chairperson for The Bread Basket Food Pantry of Carbondale and has been involved with the Trinity Episcopal Church for several years. She would organize fund raisers and their annual Thanksgiving Day dinner. She also assisted in the annual Christmas Dinner at Mitchell Hose Company in Childs and was involved with Carbondale Crimes Watch and juvenile community service programs. She was involved with the Lackawanna Valley Heritage Group and the Beautification Committee with the Downtown Business Association of Carbondale. The Red Cross has Terri certified for blood drives and emergency disaster relief. She has served after the tornadoes at Lords Valley and Lake Carey, the hurricane OPEL in Florida and several floods in Carbondale and Tunkhannock. Terri was a loving wife, sister, aunt and friend who enjoyed gardening and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by three sisters: Charolette Larson of Millington, TN., Naomi Judge of Levittown, PA. and Ronna-Gae Calachino of Blakely, PA.; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister: Louise Engle; four brothers: Ronald, Edward and Stanley Chuck Thompson and Albert Buddy Pittaway.
The funeral was held Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 9:30 AM from the Carmine J. Louis C. Parise Funeral Home Cremation Services, Inc., Farview 41st Streets, Carbondale, with services at 10:00 AM in the Trinity Episcopal Church, 58 River Street, Carbondale, celebrated by Rev. Donald Schaible, pastor. Interment, St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Honesdale, PA.
Pallbearers: Phil Colachino, III., Phil Colachino, IV., Michael Colachino, Tim Colachino, Jerry Woody and David Thompson.
Friends called Wednesday, February 24, 2010 from 5-8 PM.
