Obituary

Evelyn Horan Bannon, 98, of Emmaus PA and formerly of Carbondale, PA, died peacefully on Friday, December 9, 2016 surrounded by her loved ones at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Allentown, PA. She was the widow of Francis G. Bannon, who died on June 10, 2010. Born in Carbondale, daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Scanlon Horan, Evelyn was a lifelong member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale, where she was a daily communicant. For the past eleven years, she was also a faithful member of St. Thomas More Church, Allentown. Evelyn was the valedictorian of the Class of 1936 at St. Rose Academy. In 1940, she graduated from Marywood College with a Bachelor of Science degree in business. Prior to her marriage in 1948, she was employed at IBM in Binghamton and Murray's Corporation in Scranton. After raising her five daughters, Evelyn returned to Marywood and earned her teaching certification. For several years, she was a third grade teacher at St. Rose Elementary School, where she was loved and respected by her young students and remembered for her kindness. Following her teaching career, she served St. Rose Church as the rectory office manager for fifteen years, a position which she truly enjoyed. Evelyn's retirement was happily devoted to her family, especially spending time with her beloved grandchildren. She taught them through her profound example of unwavering faith and unconditional love. Evelyn was truly an extraordinary wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She will be loved and cherished by her family forever. Surviving are her loving daughters and sons-in-law: Mary and Robert Walter of Columbia, MD, Elizabeth Ann Bannon of Mishawaka, IN, Eileen Bannon of Hershey, PA, Kathleen and Richard McKernan of Mishawaka, IN, and Annie and Mark Kuna of Allentown, PA; her cherished grandchildren: Noreen McKernan of Chicago, IL, Andrew Walter of Savage, MD, Emily McKernan of Chicago, IL, Brian McKernan of Mishawaka, IN, Matthew Kuna of Wynnewood, PA, Ryan Kuna of Philadelphia, PA, and Scott Kuna of Allentown, PA; her beloved sister Rita Horan of Carbondale, PA.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her three brothers: Reverend Monsignor Thomas C. Horan, Reverend Walter H. Horan, O.P., and Reverend Monsignor Kenneth T. Horan; two sisters: Elizabeth Horan and Mary Martin; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. from the Edward A. Wade Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 4 Morris Place at Terrace Street, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. in St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Church Street, Carbondale, celebrated by Rev. John A. Doris, pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Dunmore and con-celebrated by Rev. James Price, pastor of St. Rose of Lima Parish, Carbondale; Msgr. David Tressler, Diocesan Secretary for Catholic Education; Msgr. Joseph Quinn, pastor of Our Lady of Snows Church, Clarks Summit; Rev. John Lapera, pastor of St. Gregory's Church, Clarks Green; Rev. Andrew Kurovsky, senior priest at St. Patrick's Church, Scranton; Rev. Paul Fontanella, assistant pastor of St. Rose of Lima Parish, Carbondale; Rev. Leo McKernan, Diocese of Scranton; Rev. Brian Kane, Dean of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, Wynnewood, PA; Deacon Edward Casey, St. Rose of Lima Parish, Carbondale; Seminarians: Matthew Kuna and Christopher Massaro. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA. Pallbearers: Andrew Walter, Brian McKernan, Ryan Kuna, Scott Kuna, Ryan Bannon and Michael Sowa. Friends and family called Tuesday, December 13, 2016 from 3 to 7 P.M. Memorial contributions were made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 2300 Adams Avenue, Scranton, PA 18509 or to St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen, 500 Penn Avenue, Scranton, PA 18503.
