Donald E. Pittaway, MD, PhD., 77, of Clemmons, NC, died Tuesday, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston Salem, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, the former Carmel Imbalzano. They were married on June 27, 1970.
Born May 8, 1947 in Carbondale, PA, he was the son of the late Clifford Pittaway, Jr. and Eleanor Ruth Schwartztrauber Pittaway.
Don grew up in Carbondale, PA and graduated from Scranton Preparatory School in Scranton, PA. Don completed his undergraduate degree in Chemistry at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. He earned a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences in Memphis, TN. He earned his MD from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport, LA. Don completed his internship and residency in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He completed his Fellowship in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN.
He served as Professor and Section Head of Reproductive Endocrinology at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC from 1983-1998. From August 1998 to June 2019, he was in private practice at the Brookview Women's Center in Winston-Salem, NC.
While at Wake Forest, he served on several committees and medical advisory boards including the Board of Trustees of the Bowman Gray Medical Foundation. He was an Ad hoc reviewer for medical publications such as the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Fertility and Sterility. In addition, he was well-published in several medical journals, including the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Infertility and Reproductive Medicine.
Since his retirement in 2019, Dr. Pittaway renewed his interest in genealogy and coin collecting. He enjoyed historical novels and biographies, especially about World War II. He was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and was a season ticketholder of the Wake Forest men's basketball team for over thirty years. He was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons, NC. Most of all, Dr. Pittaway enjoyed frequent trips to visit his children and grandchildren.
The Pittaway family would like to thank the physicians, nurses, and staff at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center and Cancer Center. The family would also like to thank the staff at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
He is also survived by two children: Jennifer Baer (Bryan) and Donny Pittaway Jr. (Katie); grandchildren: Ella Baer, Grace Baer, Georgeanna Baer, Talia Baer, Juliet Pittaway, and Donny Pittaway III; sister: Carole Mancuso (Frank); and several nieces and nephews.
Private funeral services were held from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Carbondale, PA. Interment followed in the parish cemetery, Carbondale. A memorial mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons, NC on Monday, January 6, 2025 at 10:30 a.m.
Arrangements were conducted by Carmine J. & Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Carbondale, PA
In lieu of flowers, donations were made to Doctors Without Borders or the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC.
